Rain Gardens: A Beautiful Way to Manage Rainwater

In the Blue Ridge Mountains, building on a slope isn’t the exception – it’s the rule. While this gives us stunning views and incredible opportunities for creative home design, it also presents one consistent challenge: managing stormwater runoff.

At Red Tree Builders-Alair Asheville, we believe every challenge is an opportunity for thoughtful, sustainable solutions – and that’s exactly what rainwater collection gardens provide.

What Is a Rain Garden?

A rain garden is a shallow, landscaped depression designed to collect and filter rainwater runoff from roofs, driveways, and sloped yards. These gardens are filled with native plants that thrive in both wet and dry conditions. Not only do they slow the flow of water, but they also filter pollutants and allow the water to naturally soak back into the ground.

Why We Recommend Rain Gardens in Mountain Homes

Most of our homes are built into a slope, which naturally funnels water downhill. To prevent erosion and flooding—and to make use of that runoff – we often design rainwater collection systems that direct water to a rain garden or small pond located at the bottom edge of the property.

This approach offers several benefits:

  • Reduces erosion and water pooling near the home
  • Filters out pollutants before water re-enters the ecosystem
  • Supports native wildlife and pollinators
  • Adds a unique, natural aesthetic to the landscape

How It Works

These ponds aren’t just utilitarian – they’re designed to be part of the landscape. We fill them with native plants for biodiversity and resilience, and accent them with river rock to support natural drainage, prevent erosion, and add a polished, organic look.

Depending on the layout of the property, we often create a dry creek bed or rock-lined channel that functions like a natural waterfall. This rock bed collects runoff and gently guides it down the slope directly to the pond or rain garden, controlling the flow and reducing erosion along the way.

Built With Purpose – and Beauty

While rain gardens are functional, they also give us a chance to blend beauty with utility. We choose native plants with color, texture, and seasonal interest, and use river rock to create definition and depth. The result is a garden that becomes a living, evolving part of the home’s environment.

For us, stormwater isn’t just something to manage – it’s a natural element to design with. Rain gardens let us do just that.
